AI Receptionist in Nigeria: Costs, and When to Hire a Human Instead

An AI receptionist is worth building when your business already runs on volume and misses calls after hours. Below that, the arithmetic is against you. A human answering the phone costs the statutory minimum wage of ₦70,000 a month. Foreign carrier rates for AI voice put a single minute of a Nigerian call at about ₦306, so eighteen hundred minutes a month is roughly ₦550,000 in carrier charges before a single naira goes to the model. We built both versions. Here is what happened, what changed, and where the line sits.

Prices checked against vendor pages in October 2026. Nigerian carrier and voice rates change often, so re-check before you commit.

The build that failed, and why

We have built two. One for a company in the United States worked. One for a Nigerian client did not, and the reason was not the software.

At the time, the available models had no Nigerian accent. Every call sounded foreign, and callers clocked it in the first sentence. We found YarnGPT, which produces Nigerian English, Pidgin, Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa, and it solved the voice. It could not solve the call. Latency stopped it from running in real time, and a voice agent that answers two seconds late feels broken to the person on the line.

The second problem was the number. There was no Nigerian voice call provider we could use, so the routes ran through foreign carriers at arm and leg rates. That killed the unit economics before we finished testing the accent.

Why that answer is out of date

Both blockers have moved, and if you are reading this to decide whether the idea is still dead, it is not.

ElevenLabs now has Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo voices that reply fast enough to hold a normal conversation, which is the one thing YarnGPT could not do. Nigerian phone providers for AI agents also exist now where there were none. PressOne Signals sells a Nigerian number for ₦500,000 a year before value added tax (VAT), which covers one number and up to five calls at the same time, and then charges ₦14 to ₦19.50 a minute including VAT.

The accent question has largely stopped mattering, and I will say plainly that I think anyone still building their pitch on it is behind. That is my view rather than a finding, so treat it as one. My mother sits on Facebook all day, and a friend running a business in Lagos told me the same thing from the other side: people have spent two years watching AI video with Nigerian accents run ads that make money, many of them with a voice that would not survive a room in Surulere. Their tolerance for a synthetic Nigerian accent is now close to total. What they check is whether the message is correct.

So a receptionist that answers in a slightly foreign accent and gets the price right will beat one with a perfect accent and no idea what your delivery fee is. If your objection to AI voice in Nigeria is the accent, test that objection against the advertising people are actually responding to.

What the monthly number actually looks like

The telephony choice decides this project, not the AI.

  • Twilio reaches Nigeria at a published outbound rate of $0.2303 a minute, which is roughly ₦306 (Twilio Nigeria pricing). Eighteen hundred minutes comes to about ₦550,000 a month in carrier charges alone.
  • PressOne Signals runs ₦14 to ₦19.50 a minute including VAT, plus the ₦500,000 annual plan. The same eighteen hundred minutes lands between ₦25,000 and ₦35,000.
  • Twilio is also required for a number at all on some platforms. Vapi includes one United States number and imports international ones, with carrier charges passed through at cost (Vapi phone calling).

That gap is not a rounding difference. It is the difference between a project that pays for itself and one cancelled in month three.

For comparison, the law says nobody can be paid less than ₦70,000 a month for a full-time job, and some states pay more than that. Before you price an AI receptionist, put those two numbers next to each other. Most businesses we speak to have never done that.

Where it genuinely works

These are short, factual and repeatable, which is exactly what an agent is good at.

  • Answering the same fifteen questions all day: price, location, hours, delivery areas, stock.
  • Taking a message with a name, a number and a reason, then sending it to WhatsApp.
  • Booking, confirming and rescheduling.
  • Balance and appointment reminders.
  • Answering after closing, which is where a small business loses the most calls.

If your calls are mostly one of those, an agent is a reasonable buy. If they are mostly arguments about money, it is not.

Where it fails, and we will not pretend otherwise

  • Negotiating. If your business runs on haggling, the agent holds a rigid price and annoys the buyer, or improvises and commits you to something.
  • Heavy Pidgin and code-switching. Speech to text degrades badly. The AfriVox benchmark presented at EACL 2026 measured a ten to fifteen times increase in word error rate on African-accented English against clean American benchmarks, and above 50 percent for African languages (AfriVox).
  • Yoruba, Igbo or Hausa conversation. Text to speech in those languages now exists. Holding a live back-and-forth in them does not, and the same benchmark is the reason.
  • Calming an angry customer. Escalation is the answer, and the handover has to work.
  • Settling a payment dispute. It can read out an account number. It cannot verify a transfer, argue a short payment, or grant credit.
  • Knowing your business. It knows what is in the document you uploaded, and it will be confidently wrong about everything else.

Who we build this for, and who we turn away

This is the part most of our competitors will not say, so read it twice.

We do not build an AI receptionist for a business that is not busy enough to need one. If you are running the business on your own and taking fifteen calls a week, hire someone at the minimum wage instead. They will speak in an accent your customers already know, they will recognise your regulars by name, and they will cost you less than the call charges in the table above.

If your business is genuinely busy, the same thing works the other way round. Answering at 2am, never putting a customer on hold, booking appointments while everyone is asleep tells people that you are a serious business that is ahead of its competitors. That is worth doing, and it is worth paying properly for. A build like this starts at ₦564,000, which is the smallest we will quote. Below that we walk away.

We will happily tell you that you do not need one. If you want the reasoning for your own numbers rather than a pitch, book a free consultation and we will map what your calls actually cost you today before anyone talks about automation.
